Should You Use Hashtags, Stories, or Reels? A Simple Guide Based on Your Goals

As a small business owner trying to run your own social media, you don’t have time to master everything. The key is knowing which tools to focus on based on your specific goals.

So if you’re asking, “Should I be using hashtags?” or “Do I need to post Reels?” – this post will help you choose the right features to get results without the burnout.

Goal: Get in Front of New People? → Use Hashtags & Reels

If your goal is to reach more people who don’t already follow you, then hashtags and Reels are your best friends.

Use Hashtags When:

  • You want to expand your reach organically

  • You’re posting photos, graphics, or carousel posts

  • You’re targeting a niche audience (ex: #ChattanoogaBakery or #MindfulParentingTips)

How to do it:
Add 10–15 relevant hashtags in your caption or first comment. Mix broad ones (#smallbusiness) with niche-specific ones (#philadelphiacoffee) to increase your chances of discovery.

Use Reels When:

  • You want to get in front of a new, wider audience

  • You can show your product, process, or personality in video format

  • You’re willing to experiment and keep it simple

Tip:
Reels don’t have to be elaborate. A 7-second video of you packaging an order, writing a thank-you note, or sharing a quick tip with captions can go far. Use trending audio only if it makes sense for your brand.

Goal: Build Relationships with Current Followers? → Use Stories

If your focus is on deepening relationships with people who already follow you, Stories are the way to go.

Use Stories When:

  • You want to feel more human and real online

  • You’re sharing behind-the-scenes moments or day-in-the-life updates

  • You want to get direct feedback or start conversations

Why it works:
Stories sit at the top of your followers’ feed and are perfect for casual updates. They disappear after 24 hours, which makes them feel informal and authentic.

Examples of Story content:

  • “This or that” product polls

  • A quick walk-through of your day

  • Sharing a new customer review

  • Announcing a flash sale

Bonus tip:
Use stickers like polls, questions, or sliders to boost interaction. Instagram loves engagement – and so does your audience.

Goal: Drive Sales or Website Clicks? → Use Promotions + Clear CTAs

This isn’t about features as much as being direct with your audience. You can use any content type (Reels, posts, Stories), but you need a clear offer.

  • “New product just dropped – grab yours through the link in bio.”

  • “Only 3 spots left this week – DM to book!”

  • “Our best-seller is back – shop now!”

Whether you're doing this through a Reel or a Story, the key is to make it easy for someone to take the next step.

You don’t need to use everything. Pick 1–2 features that support your goals and match your strengths.

If you love video, lean into Reels. If you’d rather keep it low-pressure, use Stories. If you're photo-heavy, combine great images with smart hashtags.

Start simple. Stay consistent. Watch what works.

And remember – done is better than perfect.
