Weather forecasts said South Jersey would dip to 28 or 29 degrees overnight. Cold, certainly, but survivable.

By sunrise, many farmers were staring at thermometers reading 22, 23, even 20 degrees.

That was, quite literally, the difference between life and death for many South Jersey farms.
